How pieces are built

Motif, Phrase, Period
MOTIF = smallest building block (2–6 notes), often recognizable by rhythm and intervals. Beethoven's "ta-ta-ta-taaa".
PHRASE = a coherent musical statement (usually 4 bars), like part of a sentence.
PERIOD = two phrases answering each other (8 bars, antecedent + consequent).
